I want to talk about the age-old Pantsing vs. Planning debate. I never heard the term until I started getting involved with NaNoWriMo a few years back. Then, it was today that I decided I really didn’t like either of those terms. I don’t really identify either and here’s why.
Storytime! This is my history of writing. Have I always wanted to be a writer? I’m not sure. I do know that I always wanted to create. I wanted to make music until I realized I couldn’t sing… at all. I wanted to make fashion until I realized I kind of sucked at drawing and my stitching was always uneven. I wanted to write and whoa, it kind of stuck and I came to the conclusion I was kind of good at it? (Maybe?!)
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been really into reading interviews of some of my favorite authors and many talk about how they got into writing and I noticed that a lot of them wrote fanfic. I actually never wrote fanfic despite growing up with online writing. I read a lot of fanfic, primarily Buffy fanfic. Like I would stay up until 4AM reading Buffy fanfic on LiveJournal. And I would call it quits when I disturbingly found Buffy/Giles fic and would abort asap because ew.
Ok, maybe I lied. I did write one fanfic. I wrote a Buffy/Xander fanfic when I was 12 or 13 and what the hell was I thinking back then because they’re bffs.
So, while I didn’t write fanfic like a lot of others have, I did write a lot online. A lot. Like, sooooo much. Guys. There’s years of my writing still around the internet, but I’ll be cryptic enough not to post any links.
Camp NaNoWriMo: April starts Saturday. If you don’t know what Camp is, well, it’s one of two sessions (next one is in July) that is like, a companion to NaNoWriMo, which takes place every November. While the event in November has a specific goal: write 50k words in a novel, the Camp sessions are more personal goal-oriented and making it what you want of it. You can check out the Camp NaNo site here.
I’m participating this year! And I’m going to lay out all my goals for this month. A lot of you know I have been working on the first draft of my new novel Sharp Hollows since I started it, you guessed it, NaNoWriMo 2016 back in November. Here is an extremely short comp blurb of what I am working on: Continue reading
Hey everyone, it’s Lainey. You probably came here because I said I was creating a blog. As my first official post, I thought I would kind of make a run down of what this blog will be (and won’t!)
As a lot of you know, I am a writer. I make a lot of writing-related videos on my YouTube Channel. Recently, I wanted to create this blog so that I can talk more about writing and my journey to hopefully be published one day. There are just some things that come across better in written form than on a video. I’m not quitting my channel, but this is just another outlet for me to talk about my writing and writing in general.
What You’ll See in This Blog:
- My writing updates, processes, gripes and anything else
- Discussions related to writing
- Writing samples (?) – when I work up enough courage
- Occasional life-things
- Anything else that will be writing-related
What You Won’t See in This Blog:
- Book reviews
- Basically anything book-related, that’s for the YouTube channel.
So, hopefully this is a good thing? I want to post at least once a week. Camp NaNo is around the corner and weekly updates is definitely in the future. So follow or sign up for email updates or however this thing works. I’m new to WordPress and don’t know how to work most of what’s in front of me.
